(IF) BLACK LIVES MATTER(ED)

Behold the hue of this resistance
Fervent and determined
And determined not to be deterred
By all these deterrents
Those benefitting from the systemic detriment
Posit opposition to these words
Black. Lives. Matter.
Revolution in the notion
That our lives are worthy
Duly noted
When provoked
We are much more tolerable when subdued
When passive
But even Martin was assassinated
I suppose to all these woes we should be acclimated
To this endemic and unending assault upon our bodies
Never to be quelled if we rise up as one body
Only then will victory be won
They wondering like “how come?”
Cuz…..

If black lives mattered, our murderers would be punishable by the law
Our communities
would be
protected, not policed
to the wind we’ve been beat
way more than three sheets
We would be given the benefit of the doubt
The courtesy of humanity
Regardless of our demeanor
Or our apparel, so beleaguered
So feared and often with no weapon at all
Just blackness, that blackness, they loathe
We been shot at and beat upon and beat down and ganged up on
And if we were seen as human beings or even Cecils or Harambes
Perhaps
They’d leave us to do our bidding
Unforgiving
In acquitting if there is even a trial
Freddie was a disturbance and Sandra Bland was suicidal
If Black lives mattered, there’d be reason for denial
Not mamas on knees grieving
Hung low in bereavement
White boy run up in the sanctuary shoot to kill but he’s no demon
We just can’t seem to see the reason
Better to be quiet than to be egregious
How dare these descendants of ineptitude demand their own safety?
Eric could not breathe for in this society we are subjects
Subjected to asphyxiation
Death sentences
Carried out immediately and outright
In broad daylight
With no fear of recrimination
And they wonder in awe at our apparent hatred
How blissful it must be to be oblivious
And to matter
The fact of the matter is
If our lives mattered
Then police brutality would be a fantasy
And we’d parade in our hoodies unbothered by authority
and celebrate this mattering
in unison
this unobstructed existence we so desperately seek
but nah…
